RAF Lakenheath 30/03/2016

With RAF Lakenheath’s intensive flying month drawing to a close (the 48th FW’s busiest since at least 2009, according to its commander on social media), there was time for one more visit early doors to photograph the Liberty Wing’s finest on Wednesday the 30th of March.

Lakenheath & Mildenhall 14/03/2016

Monday’s forecast was decent and I’m acutely aware that RAF Lakenheath is not going to be home to F-15C/Ds for ever. In March, it had been said that the resident 48th Fighter Wing would fly up to 300% of their usual number of daily missions. Add into the mix a friend being over from the States and another not long out of hospital and itching for a day out, and it was the obvious place to head.

Half-term Helicopter Photography

It’s unusual for any school holiday to be blessed with anything approaching decent weather, but this February half-term had just that. We took advantage of the situation and managed a couple of days of helicopter chasing.

RAF Marham – 11/02/2016

My first UK aviation outing (aside from the start of the DHL Twister Team journey to Bahrain) of 2016 took me to RAF Marham on the 11 February, and it turned out to be a busy day with plenty of Tornado GR4 action.

RAF Lakenheath & RAF Marham – 19/10/2015

Following the arrival of six VMFA-232 “Red Devils” F/A-18C Hornets of the US Marine Corps at RAF Lakenheath on Saturday, 17th October 2015, I had quite liked the idea of trying to catch their departure. However, I was unable to make the day they were initially planned to go. That changed due to weather in the refuelling tracks, so Monday was the next time they would try, and I could get there then.

London-Luton Airport – 12/10/2015

Having experienced some issues with my beloved Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 at Stansted, which I seemed to have rectified over the weekend, I was keen to get out and give the lens a proper run out ahead of a hectic winter schedule that should see me back in the Middle East. London-Luton Airport was the venue that won out on account of having the best weather prospects.

Kendrew Barracks (RAF Cottesmore) & RAF Coningsby

Week commencing 5th October will live long in the memory, mainly for the wrong reasons. A NOTAM had been published for the Wednesday morning through to Friday lunchtime, promising ‘intense aerial activity’ and ‘tactical landings’ at my old RAF Cottesmore stomping ground (now run by the Army and going by the name of Kendrew Barracks).

London-Stansted – 09/10/2015 – US Secretary For Defense Departs

The third of three consecutive days out last week was the shortest and also produced the most interesting movement. Having never shot one of the United States Air Force (USAF) Boeing E-4B Advanced Airborne Command Posts, when it became apparent that the one that had delivered US Secretary for Defense Ashton Carter to London on Friday would depart mid-to-late afternoon – and with the forecast set fair – it would have been remiss not to have gone to witness its departure.
